The benefits and harms of the sunlight

Normally it is said that the sun rays are harmful and we should protect ourselves from the impact of sun rays upon our skin. But the fact is that it has both bad and good effects on the skin.

These effects are due to the ultaraviolet light. The light rays are of three types ie,wavelength, UVA with longest wavelengst and UVB of shorter wavelength, and UVC of shortest wavelength.

Benefits of the sun-rays

The moderate exposure to sun light has a good effect upon the mental health and well-being, it stimulates the skin to produce vitamin D, required for the normal growth and regeneration of bone tissue. Some times we do not get enough of this vitamin D through the diet. The sunlight stimulates to get good enough levels of vitamin D.

Also moderate amount of sunshine does not promote the occurence of skin cancer. On the contrary, if the exposure to sunshine is moderate it helps to prevent cancers of several types.

At the cool places people does not get heat, they go for the sunbath for the browning effect which comes from the UVA rays stimulating the melanocytes in the skin to produce more melanine as an increased amount of melanine protects the skin against the harms of sun-rays, and make the skin tolerate greater amounts of sun before harmful effects occur.

Harms of the sun-rays

The main danger of excess sun exposure is the burning effect caused by the UVB rays. The effect is mostly due to immune cells in the skin releasing Histamine which then cause blood vessels to dilate and also cause other symptoms of acute inflammation.

The brown liver-spots are caused by the exaggerated exposure to sun. Also it can cause the cancer called bacal cell carcinoma. These effects are caused both from the UVA and UVB rays.

But the UVA and UVB rays during too much sun exposure can also cause malignant melanome. This cancer consists of melamocyte cells been transformed into cancer cell. Malignant melanoma often evolves from birth marks. This cancer can remain small for a long time, but can also spread and develop very rapidly and swiftly evolve into a serious disease. In its initial stages, the cancer look like an irregularly shaped, and abnormally or irregularly coloured birthmark.

People with too much exposure for sun and gets sunburned form an early age, have risk for malignant melanoma.

Skin cancers were thought to be caused by the UVB rays, but latest findings suggest that the whole ultraviolet spectre participates in causing cancers.

Exposure to sun for a long time will increase the speed of skin aging, multiplying and graviating wrincles. Also the blood vessels in the skin becomes permanently dilated and areas of the skin gets an abnormal or irregularly thickness, some places too thin, other places too thick. Due to the widened blood vessels, the skinvill be permanantly red.

Now a days ozone layer in the upper atmosphaere is wakened over certain areas in certain times, therefore UVC rays are not filtered out properly and has gone more dangerous and easily cause cancer and other types of skin damage.

How to protect your skin against sunlight

To get the the bebefits of the sun exposure, and not to suffer the harms caused by sun rays, the best way is to expose your skin for the sun some time, and then cover the skin by clothes.

A person with brown skin can take much more exposure to sun than a pale person. The same is applied on a person with thick skin. As you get used to the sun each year, you will gradually get browner and also tolerate more.

The more you want to expose your skin to the sun rays longer than an unprotected skin can tolerate, then you have to use Sun balms with protection from 3 to 30. The protection factor is supposed to tell how many times longer you can be in the sunshine with the balm.

The balm must also be renewed several times during the time you expose yourself for the sun, especially if you take swims.

As the face does not have any clothes on, and accordingly gets longest sun exposure, therefore it is most important to protect against the sun.

Some kinds of nutrition for example fish and olive oil in the diet make your skin more robust against the impact from sun rays.
