Bharatpur Keoladeo Bird Santcuary

Bharatpur is the eastern gateway of Rajasthan. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park -a bird sanctuary in Bharatpur is famous world wide for the finest Asia rich avian variety. This National Park attracts the tourist from all over world. Every year in winter the rare Siberian cranes come in the warmer climate of Bharatpur. The Park has a population of 375 species of birds along with many mammals and reptiles. Not only this park but also the royal Bharatpur Palace is also worth visiting.

The government banned the indiscriminate shooting of birds in 1965.

CLIMATE

During summers the temperature ranges from 38°C to 45°C and in winter temperature falls below 10°C. Ideal time to visit Bharatpur is from October till February.

HOW TO REACH

By Air: The nearest airport is Agra, which is 54 kms from Bharatpur.

By Train: Bharatpur is on Bombay-Delhi sector of Western Railway.

By Road: This city is well connected with almost all the big cities of the country. Bharatpur is on the Agra-Jaipur highway, just a two-hour journey by bus from Agra (55 km) and an hour from Fatehpur Sikri.

Keoladeo Ghana National Park

If you are bird lover and want to know more about the rare species of birds, then this National Park is the best place for you.

During the 19th Century, this park was the hunting preserve of the Maharajas of Bharatpur. Now it is one of the finest water - bird sanctuaries in the world. It is an artificial park created out of arid land by building small dams around it. The 29 sq. km lake, which is surrounded by the wetland today support over 375 species of birds. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is at its most exotic at dawn and dusk.

Various birds migrate here during winter. The finest and rare of these migratory birds are the five pairs of Siberian cranes, pure white with black primaries, crimson bills and facial patches.

One can watch here various species of egret, white-necked as well as black-necked storks, white ibis, spoonbills, night herons and other birds get busy courting and mating. Major part of the park is covered with water the remaining portion is rich with the lovely birds like the Kingfisher, Red Vented and white cheeked Bulbuls, Babblers, Quails, Partridges,Sunbirds, Sparrows, Parakeets and orioles. These birds live in bushes and burrows.

You can also get the glimpses of the rare species of deer - sambhar, nilgai, chital and also jackal, hyena, mongoose and porcupine in the marginal forests around the lake. Pythons are often seen sunning themselves at the edge of water at Python Point.

UNESCO has listed it as a world heritage site.

Bharatpur Palace

This palace is a fine example of Mughal and Rajput architecture. The magnificent palace is richly decorated with patterned floor tiles having beautiful designs on it. The museum in the main central wing displays a collection of the 2nd century which demonstrates the art and skill of the region.

Deeg (32 km)

It was once the summer resort of the rulers of Bharatpur. You can see here beautiful gardens, marvelous palaces and a colorful bazaar. It is famous for its spectacular architectural beauty. The gardens have beautiful fountains, which displays the majestic Mughal style. The palaces worth visit are Gopal Bhavan and Suraj Bhavan.
