There are various categories of motor racing. Each one is described here.
1. Single-seater (open-wheel) racing
It is the most well known form of motor sports. The cars are specially designed for high-speed racing. The wheels of the car are not covered. Most of the cars have aerofoil wings front and rear so as to produce down force and enhance adhesion to the track.
Formula One World Championship is the best-known variety of single-seater racing. It is an annual championship. Major international car and engine manufacturers display their cars in an ongoing battle of technology and driver skill. The most expensive sport in the world is Formula One, with some teams spending more than 200 million US dollars per year.
A1 Grand Prix (the world cup of motor sports), GP2 (formerly known as Formula 3000 and Formula Two), Formula Nippon, Formula Renault 3.5, Formula Three and Formula Atlantic are the other single-seater racing series.
2. Rallying or rally racing
A highly modified cars run on a point-to-point format on closed public roads or off-road areas. Here the participants and their co-drivers rally to a set of points, leaving in regular intervals from start points. A rally is typically conducted over a number of stages of any terrain, which entrants are often allowed to scout beforehand. The co-driver, who uses the pace notes to complete each stage as fast as possible, helps the driver. He reads the detailed shorthand aloud over an in-car intercom system.
The World Rally Championship, the Monte Carlo Rally and Rally Argentina are some of the famous rally racing.
3. Touring car racing
It is a style of road racing, which is run with production derived racecars.
4. Sports car racing
In this car racing, on a closed circuit the production-versions of sports cars and purpose-built prototype cars compete with each other. At least 1000 km distance is covered in this race. Usually there are teams of two or three drivers to drive the car.
Various famous sports car races include the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring.
5. Stock car racing
This car racing is the American variant of touring car racing. It is usually conducted on ovals.
