Centre set up a committe on Sethusamudram Project

The Centre has set up a six-member expert committee to examine the feasibility of alternative alignmnet to Save Ram Sethu. The panel will also comprise two special invitees from Tamil Nadu government
The Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project between Dhanushkodi and Lands End on Rameshwaram
The panel headed by noble laureate IPCC chairman RK Pachauri will also comprise two members from the state of Tamil Nadu as special invitees.
The government said that the constitution of such committee was in pursuance of the observations made by the apex court on July 23.
A bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan, Justice RV Raveendran and Justice JM Panchal had said that the issue of faith has to be addressed asking the Centre to look into whether it was feasible to save the revered structure and work out on other alignments for execution of the project. “This issue has to be worked out. Whether it is practically and politically feasible?” Justice Raveendran had said.
