The first question arises in the mind is what is character. If we speak about its meaning and if you look in the dictionary it means a quality or an attribute which defines the person.
Character education involves teaching student about basic human values like honesty, kindness, generosity, courage, freedom, equality, and respect. For successful living, character education is must. The language of respect and responsibility navigates the journey to ethical fitness. Character education adds meaning to the life inviting students to listen, share, explore, and reflect.
Students should be give character education to
develop self-esteem.
know “right” from “wrong”
respect the rights of others
proper utilization their use of time and talents
keep positive relationship and work cooperatively with others
develop the skill of decision-making
use self-discipline to achieve goals
resist negative approach
The four “e” of character education
Example
1. Example is the most obvious way to model character education. The teacher can give the various examples of leading personalities, their teaching, and thoughts to the students.
Explanation
2. Value education can be imparted by means of explanation. Student can be engaged in the moral conversations about the human race.
Ethical Climate
3. The ethical climate within a classroom helps to promote a strong influence in the formation of character. The student learns what is right and wrong.
Experience
4. Today the young people have become self-focused and busy in pleasure-dominated world. Such students should be taught to help other students; students should also help their teachers, librarians or other staff members. This gives the students experience for their life.
In schools today the students are imparted character education through various means like by telling stories by the teachers, though moral science.
Here are some tips to impart the character education to students in the class
• Students should be imparted the importance of healthy relationships from schools like by building healthy relationship between and among students, staff, and community.
• Social and emotional learning should be given along with the academic learning.
• Children should be taught about cooperation and collaboration.
• Moral values like fairness, respect, and honesty should be the part of everyday lessons in the classroom.
• They should be made aware of discipline and classroom management.
. Teacher should teach conflict resolution skill so that students become skilled at resolving conflicts peacefully.
