Coonoor, a lovely hill station, is located at the head of the Hulikal ravine at an altitude of 1,800 m above sea level. 19 km from Ooty, Coonoor is famous for its pleasant environment and for a variety of wildflowers and birds. It is a suitable place for adventures activities like trekking and hiking. You can also enjoy here the view of tea plantations and festivals. This beautiful hill station on the Nilgiri Hills offers the tourists with the magnificent view of the lush green Nilgiri hills, with its ravines, valleys, and waterfalls. If you are a bird lover then this is the ideal place for it as Coonoor is the home of a large variety of species like cormorants, pipits, thrushes, parakeets, skylarks, Nilgiri verditer, etc.

Climate

The climate in Coonoor is pleasant throughout the year. Summers are mild, while winters are cool. It receives southwestern monsoon rains in July-September. The best time to visit Coonoor is between the months of October and March.

How to reach

Coonoor is easily accessible through air, road and rail from the other major Indian cities and states.

Places of interest

The Dolphin Nose Viewpoint (10 km)

From here you can get the beautiful glimpses of the Nilgiri hills. Here you can admire the beautiful Catherine Falls.

Sim Park

Spread over 12-hectare, this charming park is home of over 1,000 plant species, including magnolia, pines, tree ferns, and camellia. The botanical garden Developed partly in the Japanese style, the main attraction of this is the annual fruit and vegetable show held in May.

Pomological Station

This is a research center of the State Agricultural Department for persimmon, pomegranates, and apricot.

The Pasteur Institute

Situated near to the Sim Park, this Institute came into existence in 1907. It specializes in the research for vaccines for rabies and polio. The institute can be visited only on Saturdays.

Lamb Rock (5½ km)

From here you can get the panoramic view of the spectacular landscape and the tea and coffee plantations.

Droog (13 km)

Tipu Sultan once used by this historical place, Droog.

Other worth visiting places is Law Falls, Ooty etc.

Festivals

The tea (January) festival and fruit and vegetable festival (May) are the main attraction of Coonoor.
