Cycles under scanner after Jaipur blasts
May 21st, 2008 · No Comments
Many would call it a knee-jerk response but authorities in Varanasi would rather be safe than sorry.
Buying a cycle will be now no more easy as the common man’s mode of transport is under the scanner.
After the recent blasts in Jaipur, where locally purchased cycles were used to place the bombs, authorities in Varanasi have made ID cards mandatory for buying cycles. Besides, traders will have to verify the buyer’s identity.
”Customers purchasing bicycles will now have to deposit their ID proofs. And the address and telephone number of the customer will have to be written on the bills,” said Vijay Prakash, SSP, Varanasi.
Terrorists have been using different methods to carry out strikes like from bags to pressure cookers and now cycles as the blasts in Malegaon, Gorakhpur and the attacks on courts in Uttar Pradesh.
Traders in Varanasi seem to be happy with the authorities’ decision to keep a vigil on the sale of cycles.
”This is very good. At least something will be stopped now,” said Kashi Nath Mishra, Cycle Trader.
Though the police have made I-cards mandatory for buying cycles, the big question still remains whether this move will help prevent terrorists from carrying out such attacks.
