CLIMATE
The best season to visit Darjeeling is between April and June as the weather during this period is generally clear and the chilling. September and November are also ideal time to visit this lovely hill station. You can enjoy the golden sunrise over the Himalayan peaks. Being a mountain city Darjeeling experiences rains throughout the year. The temperature ranges from 15 degrees in summer and 1.5 degrees in winters.
HOW TO REACH
By Air: nearest airport is the Bagdogra airport. From Bagdogra one can take a bus or taxi to Darjeeling.
By Rail: It has a railway station but only the toy train from Jalpaiguri and New Jalpaiguri comes here.
By Road: Darjeeling is well connected by roads.
PLACES OF INTEREST
Ghoom
At the walking distance from the main town of Darjeeling you can see Ghoom. Ghoom is famous for the renowned Yiga Choeling Monastery. The monastery houses several images of the Maitreya Buddha.
Kalimpong
Kalimpong is the ridge where we play. Here you can see the Rolling Meadows and the Swiss Welfare Dairy besides the steeple of the Mac Farlane Church. Dr. Graham Homes school on the Delo Hill is worth visiting in Kalimpong. Durpin Dara offers a spectacular view of the Himalayas, the monasteries like Pedong, Thongsha Gompa and Tharpa Choling Monastery.
Mirik
The hill station of Mirik gives a marvelous retreat for the sun-scorched souls of the plains. From here you can get the beautiful glimpses of the mighty Himalayas in the Sumendu Lake. Added attraction in Mirik is the splendid tea gardens and the orange orchards.
The Tiger Hill (11 kms)
Situated at an altitude of 2,555 mts, this hill provides a fine view of the mighty Everest and Kanchenjunga peaks.
The Lebona Race Course (8 kms)
This is one of the smallest and highest racecourse of the world. The official residence of the Governor of West Bengal, Shrubbery, is situated on BURCH HILL.
The Lloyd Botanical Gardens
Situated just below the main Market Motor stand, this botanical garden has rare collection of Himalayan flowers.
Zoological Park
The Zoological Park attracts the tourists, as it is the home of various species of wild animals like Yaks, Himalayan Black Bears, Pandas and also Siberian Tiger.
The Darjeeling Ranjeet Valley - It is about 3 kms from the town.
SHOPPING
Darjeeling not only offers tea but you can also buy various from the shopping malls. You can buy the beautiful curios and carpets from Chowrasta and Nehru road. If you want to decorate your home with beautiful thangkas, brass statues, religious objects, jewelery, woodcarvings, woven fabrics, then this is the ideal place for it.
For Himalayan handicraft, silk and handloom products, you can visit Manjusha Emporium. The woolen garments can be bought from the markets on Hill Cart road. This place is also famous for its bamboo items.
