Why blood test is needed?

Blood tests are performed to check whether you are healthy or not. Most common blood tests are:

1. Full blood count. Full blood test looks at all the different cells of blood including red cells, white cells, and platelets. It is performed to check for conditions like infections, anemia, and leukemia.

2. U and Es (urea and electrolytes). This test is done to find out the level of certain substances like urea, potassium, sodium and chloride.

So if anyone is suffering from certain disease, then blood tests can be used to confirm a diagnosis. If you are suffering from anemia, then a blood test will be done to check if you have abnormal red blood cells. Blood tests also show the presence or absence of any substances in the blood. For example, if your kidneys are not working properly, the blood tests will find high levels of substances such as urea in your blood.

Blood tests also give an early warning that you may develop any severe condition. Through blood test you can also get a sample of your DNA.

Blood tests are also done when you are recovering from any disease and to see how well your treatment is working.

People suffering from diabetes also go for regular blood tests. The test shows them how much sugar is in their blood. These sugar tests can be normally carry out at home. Sometimes blood tests are also done to see whether any medicines you are taking are having side effects.

If anyone needs a blood transfusion, he/she may need a blood test to check their blood group.

After Blood Tests

You may feel faint during or after a blood test. If you feel weak or dizzy, then immediately tell the doctor or nurse. Normally a small amount of blood is taken for blood test, so patient should not feel ill from loss of blood. Sometimes you might experience a small bruise in the skin around the needle prick.

Some people may develop redness or swelling during blood test. It shows you may have an infection. See your GP for advice. Occasionally, a larger area of bruising can appear. Though bruises are painful, they are usually harmless. But if you frequently get bruises from blood tests, seek the advice of your GP.
