WHAT IS JAM
Indian Institutes of Technology have started conducting a Joint Admission test to M.Sc. (JAM) for admission to M.Sc. and other post-B.Sc. programmes at the IITs. The main objective of JAM is to provide admissions to various M.Sc. and other post-B.Sc. programmes based on the performance in a single test and consolidate ‘Science’ as a career option for bright students from across the country. In due course, JAM is also expected to become a benchmark for normalising undergraduate level science education in the country.
Methodology for Deciding Cut-Off Marks is as under :
THE CUT - OFF MARK FOR THE GENERAL CATEGORY
The cut-off mark for each test paper will be decided as per the following scheme:
1. ORS / Question-cum-Answer Booklets will be processed/ evaluated and a list containing marks of all candidates appeared in the given test paper will be prepared. These marks are serealised in descending order.
2. From the list prepared in Step 1, the mean () and the standard deviation () of all the marks are computed.
3. The number N, the total number of available seats (in general category) in various programmes of all IITs covered under the test paper is noted. Also, the mark M, at serial number 2 x N (2 times N) in the list prepared at Step 1 is noted.
4. The cut-off mark equals the maximum of + and M.
THE CUT- OFF MARK FOR THE RESERVED (SC / ST / PD) CATEGORY
The cut-off mark, in a given subject, for the SC/ST and PD candidates will be two third (rounded-off to the next higher number) of the cut-off mark for the general category candidates in that subject.
THE CUT- OFF MARK FOR THE RESERVED (OBC) CATEGORY
The cut-off mark, in a given subject, for the OBC candidates will be 90% (rounded-off to the next higher number) of the cut-off mark for the general category candidates in that subject.
