Kapalbhati pranayama

Literally Kapalbhati means to lighten the skull. Here Kapala means skull and Bhati means light or luster. In this kind of pranayama the inhalation is slow and exhalation is vigorous with a split second of retention after each out-breath.

Procedure:

1. To start this pranayama sit straight in any position either with legs crossed or in a lotus position. Then exhale whatever breath in the lungs.

2. Inhale slowly. Relax the abdomen. Allow the air to return gently to the lungs.

3. Again exhale with a quick, strong blast of air. Contract the muscles of abdomen quickly. This causes the diaphragm to rise and force the air out of the lungs.

4. Repeat this method for four to eight blasts.

Precaution:

For the beginners, it is convenient to do 3-5 cycles and gradually increase as long as you feel comfortable. If you feel irritation or strain stop the practice immediately.

If you are suffering from high or low blood pressure, have eye or ear complaints etc. should not attempt this pranayama.
