A group of 36 coral islands collectively known as Lakshadweep lies in the western coast of Kerela. Out of 36 islands, only 10 are inhabited. People here are simple, peace-loving and their language is similar to that spoken in Kerala. The main occupations of the people of this island are coconut cultivation, coir matting and fishing etc.

Major attractions here are water sports, snorkeling and wind surfing. The five beautiful islands are open to tourists. These have simple accommodation in the shape of beach cottages. You have to first seek permits to visit Lakshadweep from the Lakshadweep tourist office in Cochin.

 Climate

Temperature is normally uniform over the territory. The hottest months in the year are April and May. It range from 35 Degrees Nights are normally pleasant, as the cool sea breeze.

How to reach

You can easily access here through the regular flights, which operate from Cochin to one of the islands. Other option to reach is through ship cruises, which stop at all the islands open to tourism. It begins and end at Cochin.

Places of Interest

Kavaratti

This beautiful island has 52 mosques, the most beautiful being the Ujra mosque. This mosque has well, which is believed to contain water of curative powers. This mosque has a beautifully carved ceiling. It has been carved from a piece of driftwood. The charming lake and the tombs are the other worth visiting places here.

Kalpeni

It has three uninhabited, satellite islands. All are surrounded by charming lagoon. The water sparkle, as the sunlight falls on it. Koomel is the curving bay. The two beautiful island Pitti and Tialkam can be seen from here. This lagoon is rich in coral life.

Kadamat

It is a lagoon of even depth, which is perfect for swimming. At a few distance away from habitation, you can find the tourist huts. Facilities of water sports are available.

Minicoy

In the beautiful island of Minicoy, you can find a lighthouse. The British built it about hundred years ago. Minicoy is the largest island in Lakshadweep. It attracts the tourist because of its dress, language, food, which is totally different from the other island of the Lakshadweep. Minicoy has a cluster of 9 villages. These are called Athinis.

Bangaram

Bangaram has three uninhabited islands consisting of Tirmakara, Parali-I, Parali- II. It is surrounded by one of the largest and safest lagoons. You can enjoy here the coral formations, the large variety of coral fish: the angel, the clown, the butterfly, the surgeon, the sweetlip, the snappers, the groupers, sharks, manta rays, sting rays, moray eels (morena) and turtles.
