In its news article the AFP writes “Indian police on Friday distributed sketches of three more men suspected of involvement in serial blasts that ripped through the pink walled city of Jaipur earlier this week killing 63 people.
The latest sketches were of men in their late teens to mid-20s believed to have bought bicycles used in the string of explosions that took place along a busy shopping street in the capital of India’s desert state of Rajasthan.”
The sketches were based on descriptions “from the people who sold them the cycles,” the state’s top police official Amarjot Singh Gill told AFP.
Police had issued one sketch a day after the blasts, which injured over 200 in Jaipur, one of the country’s top tourist magnets popularly known as the Pink City because of the colour of its buildings.
Police had questioned dozens of people who were later released. Nobody has yet to be formally arrested.
Detectives expected to verify by later Friday the authenticity of an e-mail and video sent by a little-known group calling itself the Indian Mujahideen, which claimed responsibility for the attacks, he said.
“By today we should be able the verify the veracity of the mail,” he said.
The video showed a bicycle with a serial number that tallied with one of the bicycles used in the blasts, the Times of India reported on Friday.
Eight bombs went off in the space of 12 minutes at crowded markets and close to several Hindu temples in the historic city, famed for its palaces and forts 260 kilometres (160 miles) west of New Delhi.
“We are not rejecting the e-mail angle,” said Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, according to the Times of India.
But Raje also said the e-mail might be an attempt to mislead police, the daily said.
Police said they were pleased with the progress the investigation was making so far. But similar bombings in the past have seen few prosecutions.
Raje said earlier that an “international terrorist gang” was likely to blame for the attacks.
She said the bombs were highly sophisticated, mixing explosives, ammonium nitrate and ball bearings to create high-impact detonations, with the bearings acting like tiny missiles.
At one site the ball bearings had left scores of grooves on a steel pole and on the facade of a temple at least 20 feet away.
India has frequently pointed an accusing finger at Pakistan-based groups fighting New Delhi’s rule in Kashmir following bombings that have plagued the country for years. But this time it has made no such charges.
The country’s foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee is due to head to Islamabad next Tuesday to review the progress of a slow-moving four-year-old peace process between the two nuclear-armed nations which have fought three wars.
Jaipur residents meantime expressed shock over the attack — the first of its scale in the city of 2.7 million.
“We have always lived side-by-side in this city,” said Anisa Maruf, 35, who lost her 12-year-old daughter Irma in an explosion near a Hindu temple on the street where she lives with her Muslim family.
“Only someone from outside the country could have done something like this.”
