Situated in the state of Maharashtra, Mahabaleshwar was once the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency. It is situated at an altitude of 1372 meters. Mahabaleshwar attracts the tourists for its splendid panoramic views of the scenic valley, and the ravishing sea.

Mahabaleshwar remain closed during the monsoon season that is from mid-June to mid-September. The region receives about 6 meters of rain during this season. The local buildings are covered with kulum grass to prevent any damage from the torrential rains.

The crystal waters of the numerous waterfalls are delight to bathe in. You could enjoy the trekking at Pratapgarh Fort. You could shop in the tiny lanes of the bazaar. Here you could buy every item from shoes to luscious strawberries, blackberries, jams and jellies.

When to visit

Best time to visit Mahabaleshwar is October to June.

How to reach

By Air: The nearest airport for Mahabaleshwar is Pune, which is 120 km.

By Rail: The nearest railhead is Wathar (62 km) but Pune (120 km) is also the convenient railhead.

By Road: The State Transport buses ply from Mumbai and Pune to Mahabaleshwar.

Places of interest

Mount Malcolm:

It was built in 1829 with magnificent architectural skills. Unfortunately, it has lost a lot of its old charm now.

Catholic Church:

This old Raman Catholic Holy cross- church has a stained glass windows, which are worth a detour.

Morarji Castle:

This castle has a historical importance as Mahatma Gandhi once lived here in 1945.

Pratapgad Fort:

About 24 Kms away from Mahabaleshwar, this fort was built in 166 by the Maratha ruler Shivaji. The fort is worth watching.

Mahabaleshwar Club:

Built in 1881, this club is popular for its well-tended roses and lovely jogging track. Only members are allowed here. Royal members grandly celebrate Christmas every year. One facility is available to the visitors here; they can enjoy the golf course.

Wilson point

It is the highest point of Mahabaleshwar. You get a splendid view of the sunrise from here as it has three observations tower. Elphinstone Point, Babington Point, Kates Point and Arthurs Point are also worth visiting.

Other places in Mahabaleshwar worth visiting are the Connaught Peak or the Mount Olympia and Echo Point.

Mahabaleshwar Excursion:

Panchgani is the other hill station near Mahabaleshwar, which is worth visiting.

Shopping

Mahabaleshwar is famous for the different kind of berries like the strawberries, gooseberries and raspberries. It is also very popular for its leather goods and tribal trinkets.
