Causes and Prevention of Obesity among Kids 

Number of factors contribute to becoming overweight, either alone or together. Lifestyle habits is one of the major cause. But sometimes Genetic Factors are also responsible for the obesity among children. In some cases endocrine problems, genetic syndromes, and medications can be associated with the excessive weight gain.

Much of what we eat is quick and easy - from fat-laden fast food to microwave and prepackaged meals. Mothers, now a days, are also the earning member of the family so the daily schedules are so jam-packed that there is little time to prepare healthier meals. Children also spend less time in exercising and more time in front of T.V., video games etc. They spend less time in playing outdoor games. Less physical activity leads to obesity among kids.

The major cause of overweight among children is the television. According to the research kids who watch more than 4 hours a day are more likely to be overweight compared with kids who watch 2 hours or less. One important thing to note is TV now a days is not in the drawing room but in the bedroom. This increases likelihood of being overweight. Once children get home from school, virtually all of their free time before dinner, doing homework, and getting ready for bed is spent in front of one screen or another!

Physical education in the schools is also getting cut down.

Some times Genetics factor also plays an important role for obesity. The function of genes in our body is to know our body type, how our body stores and burns fat just like they help determine other traits. We all know that the genes transfer from one generation to the next resulting in multiple members of a family struggling with weight. Other factors causing overweight may be some time kids tend to eat more when they are feeling sad, stressed, or bored.

Preventing Overweight among Children

You can avoid overweight among children by following few steps:

- Never reward children for good behavior or try to stop bad behavior with sweets or treats.

- Completely eliminate all sweets and favorite snacks from overweight children diet.

- If kids are satisfied, do not force them to continue eating.

- Cut down on TV, computer, and video game time and discourage eating while watching.

- Include 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day in their diet instead of junk foods. Plan healthy snacks, and encourage kids to eat breakfast every day.

- Increase the physical activity in your child life. You may spend some time with them during that period resulting to shed those extra kilos from you also.
