Pranayama – a general introduction

The controlling of Breath is Pranayama. Here Prana means Breath. And ayama means control. So Pranayama is – Control of Breath. One can achieve healthy body and mind through Pranayama. Five types of prana are responsible For various pranic activities in the body, five types of prana are responsible. These are Prana, Apana, Vyan, Udana & Samana. Prana and Apana are most important out of these five.

What is Prana and Apana?

Let us understand the meaning of Prana and Apana. The upward flowing is Prana and Apana is downward flowing. This Prana and Apana help achieve the healthy body and mind.

Pranayama is a process, which is concerned with the breathing. If done wrongly, it may do harm to the person. Due to this many people fear from taking up Pranayama. It is not a difficult process. If learnt under proper guidance it can be done by a common man. Routine practice gives the wonderful and unimaginable benefits.

Actual Pranayama means the holding up of the process of exhaling and inhaling. While ding this movement of other parts is avoided. To practice breathing more effectively the face is kept quite and relaxed.

Pranayama stimulates the system and fills the lungs with fresh air and raises the internal temperature. This helps in increasing the absorption of oxygen. The exhalation causes the diaphragm to return to the original position and air full of toxins and impurities is forced out by the contraction of the muscles. This helps to massage the abdominal muscles and tone up the working of various organs of the body. As the organs functions properly because of Prayanama, vital energy flows to all the systems. It success depends on proper ratios being maintained between inhalation, exhalation and retention.
