The Jupiter- a general information

The fifth and largest planet in our solar system is Jupiter. This giant planet made of gas has a thick atmosphere. It has 39 known moons. Like Saturn it also has a dark, barely-visible ring. The most peculiar features of this planet are bands across its latitudes and a great red spot, which is a storm.
The planet radiates twice as much heat as it absorbs from the Sun. Jupiter is composed of gas. The atmosphere of Jupiter is composed of about 90% hydrogen and 10 % helium. 0.07% of methane, water, ammonia, and rock dust in small quantity is found. With strong magnetic field, this planet is slightly flattened at its poles and it bulges out a bit at the equator.
The diameter of Jupiter is 88,700 miles i.e. 142,800 km. It is more than 11 times the diameter of the Earth. You would be amazed to know that Jupiter is so big that all the other planets in our Solar System could fit inside Jupiter.
Jupiter takes 9.8 Earth hours to revolve around its axis. This is called a Jovian day. 11.86 years of Earth is taken by Jupiter to orbit the sun once. This is called a Jovian year.
This huge planet is made up of gases and liquids, so when it rotates, its parts do not rotate at exactly the same velocity. The ring of Jupiter is faint and dark mostly composed of tiny rock fragments and dust. NASA discovered these rings in 1980. The ring of Jupiter is in three sections. These are the Main ring, a Halo, and a very wide Gossamer ring that extends far from Jupiter.
The average temperature of Jupiter is 120 K = -153°C = -244°F. The third-brightest object in the night sky is Jupiter after the moon and Venus.

Jupiter has four big moon and dozens of smaller ones. Scientists find more moons all the time. The four moons of Jupiter are, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. As Galileo first discovered these moons, so they are also known as the Galilean moons. In the Solar System, Ganymede is the largest moon.
Besides these four, Jupiter has 39 known moon.
