The Saturn- a general information
March 13th, 2008 · No Comments
Can you name the second largest planet in our solar system? Yes, it is Saturn, which has beautiful rings around it and is the sixth planet from the sun in our solar system. Its rings are made mostly of ice chunks and some rock. The size ranges from the size of a fingernail to the size of a car. This planet was named for the Roman god of agriculture.
Saturn is made of helium, hydrogen and methane gases. This planet is visible without using a telescope, but you will need a low-power telescope to see its rings.
Saturn is about 74,898 miles that means 120,536 km in diameter. It is about 9.4 times the diameter of our planet that is the Earth. You will be amazed to know that 764 Earths could fit inside a hollowed-out Saturn. The mean distance of Saturn from the Sun is 1,429,400,000 km.
The temperature on Saturn is 88 K (-185° C; -290° F). A year on Saturn takes 29.46 Earth years, which means it takes 29.46 Earth years to complete one round of Sun. The rotational period of Saturn is 10.233 hours.
In our Solar System, Saturn is the only planet that is less dense than water. It means that it would float if there were a large body of water. The ring system of this planet makes it one of the most beautiful objects in the solar system. These rings further split into a number of different parts. These parts include the bright A and B rings and a fainter C ring. The ring system also has various gaps. The origin of these rings is not known. It is believed that they may have been formed from larger moons, which shattered by the impacts of comets and meteoroids.
The outer layer of Saturn is mainly composed of molecular hydrogen. Inside the Saturn, as we go deeper, the gas resembles a hot liquid where the pressure reaches 100,000 bars. Here hydrogen changes into a new state of metallic hydrogen and resembles a molten metal. After this, below the metallic hydrogen there is a layer of ice. This ice is a soupy liquid mixture of water, methane, and ammonia under high temperatures and pressures. And finally at the center of this planet is a rocky or rocky-ice core.
MOON OF SATURN
33 moons of Saturn were discovered as of August 2004. But it has 18 named moons. These are:
The largest is the Titan, Rhea, Iapetus, Dione, Tethys, Enceladus, Mimas, Hyperion, Phoebe, Janus, Epimetheus, Pandora, Prometheus, Helene, Telesto, Atlas, Calypso, and Pan (the smallest). About a dozen others have been noted but they have been not named yet.
