What is e-commerce?
The full form of eCommerce is electronic commerce. It is defined as the buying and selling of any goods and services on the Internet, especially the World Wide Web.
The general public came to know about it in 1994. At that time many people forecasted that e-commerce would soon become a major economic sector. But it took almost four years for security protocols to become sufficiently developed and widely deployed.
If any company wants to expand their market, then selling their goods and services through ecommerce site is the best alternate. The company can reach more customers through it and it is also more cost effective. It has become so effective that some businesses have even forgone a physical location. The success with your ecommerce site depends if you try to meet the needs of your customers through simple process. The customers should not need a manual to figure out how to buy something. Simply have a searchable catalog and a minimal number of clicks to get from the product page to the order page.
Ecommerce can be further divided into four categories
1. B2B (Business-to-Business)
In this category companies do business with each other. Manufacturers selling to distributors and wholesalers selling to retailers. Pricing is often negotiable.
2. B2C (Business-to-Consumer)
Selling goods and services to the general public is B2C. Here products are sold through catalogs utilizing shopping cart software.
3. C2B (Consumer-to-Business)
In this category a consumer posts his project. He also sets his budget online. Within a few hours companies review the requirements of the consumer and bid on the project. Now the consumer reviews the bids and selects the company that will complete the project.
4. C2C (Consumer-to-Consumer)
Several sites are available, which offer free classifieds, auctions, and forums. The consumer can buy and sell. People can send and receive money online with ease.
