The mangalorean writes “A seminar held here recently has recommended conservation of unique marine biodiversity hotspots such as Netrani Island, off Murdeshwar in Uttara Kannada, by declaring them as biodiversity heritage sites.According to a statement issued by the Mangalore Research Centre of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), which conducted the seminar on biodiversity, the proceedings led to the recommendation of launch of studies on marine birds on which there is very little information.

Scientist from the Thoothukudi centre of the CMFRI P.U. Zacharia had made a presentation on Karnataka Marine Biodiversity and had highlighted the presence of unique ecosystems — coral reefs — along Netrani Island. He had pointed out that naval activity, involving target practice and shelling, was affecting the biodiversity adversely.
