Resident doctors won’t get revised pay for October
September 30th, 2008 · 5 Comments
“It is shocking that the Union health ministry simply forgot to send a notification for revision of salary of resident doctors. This, despite the sixth pay commission dedicating one paragraph for resident doctors in its recommendation,” said Dr Akhil Singhal, vice-president, resident doctors’ association (RDA), Lok Nayak Hospital. The Times of India writes-
“We are being deprived of our basic rights. The AIIMS administration has, however, promised resident doctors that it will be paying us the corresponding salary as per the new scale, which would be adjusted once the ministry takes a final decision. But it is unfortunate the ministry forgot about us,” said Dr Kumar Harsh, RDA president, AIIMS.
The RDA members of Lok Nayak Hospital approached the Indian Medical Association for help. “We support the doctors. Since 1986, resident doctors have been getting salaries as per revised scales. We will write to the government over the issue,” said Dr Anil Bansal, assistant secretary, IMA. According to resident doctors, the government has created huge disparity amongst medical professionals. “Staff nurses with less than one year of experience would be drawing more salary that senior resident doctors. This is just not done,” said Dr Dhirendra Dhiraj, coordinating secretary, federation of resident doctors association (FORDA).
Delhi health minister Dr Yoganand Shastri said: “We will write to the Union health ministry and convey the grievances of resident doctors. Once we get the notification, we will immediately process their salary as per new scales.”

Indeed it is very disappointing to know that we are let down once again. It is really painful to continue to work drawing low salary when all others enjoy their fat pay. I sincerely hope and pray that the health ministry takes up the matter urgently and redress our grievances at the earliest so that we can continue our good work in caring for patients. In any hospital, the resident doctors are the pillars of patient care.Hence it is desirable to consider the matter seriously before the resident doctors decide to strike work demanding for justice.

All the Govt hospitals all across India are totally dependant on the resident doctors, whether they are Non PG JR’s, PG JR’s, SR’s, MCh or DM residents. If we are not given our right then we have no option but to hit back hard.We do not like to go on strike but its the frustration thats makes us do so.So many of our comrades leave India and settle abroad. Why?Because Indian doctors in the Govt set up are the least paid especially in the states. The inflation is the same for everyone then why not the pay hike?We work the most so we have the right to get what we deserve. Most unfortunately, a doctor sitting in the ministry cannot understand so, he has no right of being neither a doctor nor a minister.

Can anyone tell me how to get a copy of the latest pay recommendation , and the Health Min. Order.
I wholeheartedly agree that we are underpaid, overworked, exploited and after all this we have to face such injustice.
Actually the Government DOES NOT want good healthcare for the poor.
An uhappy, underpaid, overworked doctor= Mistakes in diagnosis and treatment.
Majority of doctors are ill due to such work conditions. Our near and dear ones suffer because of our lifestyles.
Still the government has the audacity to pay us peanuts.
You cannot compare an engineer or beurocrat with a doctor, specially when it comes to salary.
It will take quite a few court cases to sort all this.
We should suport all our collegues involved in the legal representation.
