Pophoto in the Review of Canon Powershot S5 IS writes “This is a great-looking EVF that is solidly built, fun to use, and has unique stereo recording for video capture. Dedicated buttons for image quality adjustments are a great touch, as is the articulated LCD screen. Optical Image stabilization allows for sharp shots even when the lighting isn’t perfect, and overall the ergonomics and design of this camera are top-shelf. Unfortunately, image quality at ISO 400 and up isn’t up to snuff, and it is a shame that such a well-designed camera from a major player suffers where it matters most”.
Trusted reviews in the Verdict Review of Canon Powershot S5 IS writes “The Canon PowerShot S5 IS is unquestionably the most versatile digital camera on the market, with a powerful high quality zoom lens, superb image stabilisation, class-leading performance and what may be the best AF system on the market. It has a huge range of features, including a video mode with full zoom lens and stereo audio. It is slightly let down by the small sensor and its inherent noise problems, but it is still an outstanding camera by any standard”.
Digital Camera Hq Reviews the Canon Powershot S5 IS and writes “The S5 IS picks up where the S3 and S2 IS left off (what, no S4?), with a long 12x image stabilized zoom lens and 8 megapixel sensor. The biggest addition to this model is the Face Detection auto focus, which is smart enough to figure out that you’re trying to take a picture of someone’s face and not something ten feet behind them. For current S3 or S2 users, this isn’t a tremendous step up from what you’ve already got, but if you’re someone who hasn’t yet experienced the impressive quality of the ‘S’ series yet, the S5 is a nice, fresh entry-point.”
Luminous Landscape Reviews the Canon Powershot S5 IS and writes about its Shutter Performance that “Still disinclined to open the manual (I was in the car), I decided to try to be creative: Hmm. Where’s the aperture and shutter-speed control dial? – ahh, the 4-way controller. It’s also labeled with the exposure compensation icon, but nothing else – like, White Balance, or ISO. Wait, there’s an ISO button – change that to 80 from “Auto”. My G3 experience tells me that “FUNC.” means essential shooting settings – there’s the White Balance, first on that menu. Oops, the picture quality is “Large” but only medium compression – set that to “Superfine” and leave it there. Moving on, I press the “DISP.” button a few times: it cycles through two levels of info settings for the viewfinder and the display – live histogram, excellent; rule of thirds grid, nice! Check out the “Menu” menus – quite Canon. Safety FE? Safety MF? Tally Lamp? Ok, I’ve got some reading to do when I get home. Still, within an hour, I was familiar and capable without the manual at all. Verdict: out-of-the-box experience with the S5 IS is what I expected it be - quite positive.”
Bob Atkins Reviews the Canon Powershot S5 IS and writes “The Powershot S5 IS looks like a very capable digicam indeed. With an image stabilized lens covering 36-432mm and an ISO capability up to 1600, and pretty much the same shooting modes as the Canon DSLRs, there won’t be too many situations in which the S5 will fail to get the shot. One limitation is that 36mm isn’t very wide. Canon do have a front mount teleconverter (TC-DC58B ) with a 1.5x multiplier factor, giving you a maximum focal length of 648mm, but strangely they don’t have a wideangle converter, which would probably be more useful. There are a number of 3rd party wideangle converters available, but most of them result in some loss of image quality.”
Digital Camera Info Reviews the Canon Powershot S5 IS and writes that “The Canon PowerShot S5 IS combines a few aged components with some new technology and upgrades. The 8-megapixel ultra-zoom digital camera has a 12x optical zoom lens that has made several appearances on previous S-series models. The 12x lens used to be considered long, but is now one of the shorter lenses on an ultra-zoom camera. Newer cameras have 15x and 18x lenses – and are less expensive. The S5’s $499 price tag is steep and hard to justify when the competition is offering more features. In addition, the S5 doesn’t perform as well as it should. Granted, its colors are beautifully accurate, but its dynamic range and noise levels are subpar, even when compared to less expensive compact digital cameras. The S5 is still a great hybrid digital camera. It takes excellent video with stereo audio, and its 12x optical zoom and image stabilization are functional. If only the pictures were as good. The burst mode lags at 1.5 fps, the autofocus isn’t as quick as its DSLR-like body suggests, and noise renders some images nearly unusable. There are better options for the price.”
Steve’s Digicam Reviews the Canon Powershot S5 IS and give its conclusion that “Indoors, the S5 also performed well. The flash has an above average range of about 17 feet at wide angle (ISO Auto), and when combined with the 36mm wide angle extreme, will afford you nice interior shots in mid sized rooms; do not expect this flash to illuminate large open rooms. However, unlike past models, the S5 offers a new flash hot shoe that allows the use of Canon EX Speed lites. This greatly adds to the versatility of this model and is a feature that is long over due on this series. I achieved nice results using the dedicated Portrait scene mode as well as Aperture Priority, shooting from about 7 feet away with the built-in flash unit. Our close-up portrait shots show pleasing facial details and skin tones. Like the S3, the flash does not automatically pop-up when needed; it must be manually raised to fire - which is slightly annoying. You’ll be able to include yourself in group portraits because the S5 IS has both a tripod socket and self- timer. The S5’s autofocus system delivered consistently sharp images. It uses only a single AF point, but you can position it virtually anywhere in your composition. Thanks to the AF-assist lamp, the S5 is able to achieve autofocus quite well in marginal lighting to complete darkness“.
